Arthroscopic Knee Surgery: A Minimally Invasive Path to Faster Recovery

When conservative treatments — rest, ice, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications — fail to relieve persistent knee pain, orthopedic surgeons consider whether a minimally invasive procedure called knee arthroscopy is appropriate.
What is arthroscopic knee surgery?
Arthroscopy uses a tiny camera called an arthroscope to examine the interior of the knee joint. The camera transmits high-resolution images to a screen, allowing the surgeon to pinpoint the problem. If repair is needed, additional small incisions are made to insert specialized instruments that remove or repair damaged tissue.
How the procedure works
A small incision is made in the knee. The arthroscope enters the joint and the surgeon evaluates what they see in real time. Repair, when needed, is performed through one or two additional small incisions. Because the incisions are much smaller than traditional open surgery, patients experience less scarring, reduced recovery time, and less post-operative pain.
Which knee injuries can arthroscopy treat?
Knee injuries are common in athletes and older adults. While osteoarthritis-related pain usually requires different treatment approaches, arthroscopy is effective for many soft-tissue injuries and joint problems.
1. Meniscus tears
The menisci are two rubbery cartilage wedges that cushion the knee. Tears occur from trauma (sports, falls) or from age-related wear. Arthroscopy lets surgeons suture a repairable tear or remove damaged cartilage that is causing pain or mechanical symptoms.
2. ACL tears
The anterior cruciate ligament stabilizes the knee. When torn, the ACL can cause instability, buckling, and difficulty walking. Many ACL injuries can be reconstructed arthroscopically, restoring knee function and strength.
3. Patellar tendonitis (jumper's knee)
Overuse can inflame the tendon connecting the kneecap to the tibia. When the tissue becomes irritated and partially tears, arthroscopy can remove damaged tissue and reduce pain and inflammation.
4. Bursitis
The bursae that cushion the knee can become inflamed from overuse or repetitive motion. When physical therapy and injections do not resolve the problem, arthroscopy can provide long-term relief.
5. Synovitis
The synovium — the soft tissue lining the knee joint — can become swollen and irritated from injury or overuse. Arthroscopic removal of the inflamed tissue often dramatically improves pain and mobility.
6. Loose fragments
Fractures or cartilage wear can leave loose fragments floating inside the joint. These fragments cause irritation, inflammation, and pain. Arthroscopy removes them and prevents further joint damage.
Recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery
The small incisions heal quickly, but the underlying repair takes time. Most patients elevate and rest the leg for the first few days to minimize swelling, then follow a structured physical therapy plan to restore strength and mobility. Activity is gradually increased with surgeon guidance. Most people resume normal activities within a few weeks, though sport-specific return depends on which procedure was performed.
