How often should I have my feet checked?

At minimum, an annual diabetic foot exam — sooner if you have any of these: peripheral neuropathy, prior foot ulcer, foot deformity, vascular disease, or smoking history. Patients in the higher-risk groups are often seen every 2–3 months.

What if I find a sore or cut that won't heal?

Call us right away — same day if possible. A non-healing wound in a diabetic foot needs prompt evaluation. Early treatment is the difference between routine care and a serious complication.

Will Medicare cover diabetic shoes?

Yes. Medicare and most major insurance plans cover therapeutic diabetic shoes and inserts once per year for patients with qualifying findings. We document and bill for the program directly.

I do not have pain — why do I need diabetic foot care?

That is exactly the reason. Loss of sensation is the most dangerous diabetic foot finding because it allows small injuries to become severe before you notice. Regular surveillance is the single most effective way to prevent amputation.
