About this service

What is lapiplasty bunion surgery?

Lapiplasty is a modern surgical technique that corrects bunions in all three dimensions, not just the two that traditional bunion surgery addresses. It realigns the metatarsal at its base — the actual root of most bunion deformities — and uses titanium plates to hold the correction firmly in place. Most patients are bearing weight in a surgical boot within days and back in athletic shoes by 6 to 8 weeks.

What we treat

Common reasons to see lapiplasty bunion surgery

Painful bunions that have failed conservative care
Recurring bunions after prior traditional bunionectomy
Bunions causing transfer metatarsalgia or hammertoes
Bunions limiting shoe choice or activity
From symptoms to solutions

How we diagnose

A Lapiplasty consultation takes about 30 minutes. Your podiatrist will examine the bunion in standing and non-weight-bearing positions, evaluate joint flexibility, and look at the entire foot biomechanics to understand what is driving the deformity. Weight-bearing X-rays are taken in our office to assess the metatarsal alignment in three dimensions. If you are a candidate, we walk you through the procedure, recovery timeline, and what to expect at every stage — and we discuss whether you are better served by Lapiplasty or a more traditional bunionectomy.

Treatment options

Treatments we offer

Lapiplasty addresses the root cause of most bunions — a rotated and unstable first metatarsal — rather than just shaving the bump off the side. For the right candidate it provides a durable correction and a faster, more predictable recovery than the older approaches.

Lapiplasty 3D bunion correction
Realigns the metatarsal at its base in three dimensions, secured with titanium plates. Most patients bear weight within days in a surgical boot.
Traditional bunionectomy
Still the right choice for some patients — particularly small bunions or specific anatomy. We discuss the trade-offs before surgery.
Combined forefoot correction
Lapiplasty paired with hammertoe correction or second metatarsal procedures when the whole forefoot needs addressing together.
Custom post-op orthotics
Fit in clinic during recovery to support the corrected position and prevent recurrence.
Recovery plan
Detailed week-by-week guidance through 6–8 weeks of recovery, with PT integration if needed.
